ARE YOU AN IDOL
WORSHIPER?
To be all you can be you must not be an idol worshiper. What is an idol worshiper?
Anyone whose heart loves something more than they love God is an
idolater. Paul said, “ Flee from
idolatry.” He also warned that just before Jesus returns people would be
“lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God.” John the Apostle said we needed
to “keep ourselves from idols.” These
are warnings to those who seek to follow Jesus.
Paul and John are telling us to be careful to guard our hearts so we do
not become an idol worshiper.
What is an idol?
Statues of manmade gods are idols, but an idol can also be anything in
our heart that is more important to us than following the Holy Spirit’s leading
in our lives. What are the things in our
hearts that can be idols? Some are obvious such as loving the comforts of this
world more than God, wanting to please people instead of God, wanting to do
things that God has not given us permission to do, and loving the things we
have or would like to have more than God.
Some idols are less obvious. Things God has given us can become idols.
The ministry we have, the people we have fellowship with, ministry
organizations we are part of, all must be placed on the altar as Abraham did
with Isaac. If we cannot walk away from
them at God’s leading, they are an idol. We need to exam our hearts to see if
we are an idol worshiper because, idols will keep us from being
all God wants us to be.
The question we need to ask
ourselves regularly; is anything more important to me than doing what God asks
me to do?
